'Information' and 'communication' are often used interchangeably however they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through. The telecommunication covers both the above mentioned aspects.

Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication. This can be through a connection or network of computer systems to transmit information.

Telecommunication owes to its long creative history. Dating back in time, communication appeared in the form of smoke signals, waiving flag, blowing horns etc. With the advent of technology, the face of telecommunication has evolved and has come into being as radio, television, telegraphs and most importantly the internet.

The societal importance of telecommunications is well accepted and broadly understood, which is reflected in its near-ubiquitous penetration and use. It has benefitted and enhanced the markets of the world by creating a tighter community and allowing for quicker reaction time and exchanging information. It has helped in seeking better client management and satisfaction by making information access and networking easier and more effective.

Telecommunication has enabled businesses to operate in the 21st century using only a virtual interface. The range of telecommunications applications is broad and includes the functions like : telephony, video conferencing, facsimile, broadcast and interactive television, instant messaging, e-mail, distributed collaboration, a host of Web- and Internet-based communication, and data transmission. The District of Columbia is one of the evident examples that elucidate the crucial service that telecommunication systems provide in the business community.

The ballooning use of telecommunication tools has increased their demand immensely, thereby putting a pressure on the telecom equipment suppliers. Similarly, the telecommunications industry has grown broader than it was in the past. It encompasses multiple service providers, including telephone companies, cable system operators, Internet service providers, wireless carriers, and satellite operators. The industry today includes software-based applications with a communications emphasis and intermediate layers of software incorporated into end-to-end communication services. According to a survey 2013, the leading telecom equipment supplier companies are as follows:-

  1. Ericsson

  2. Cisco Systems

  3. Fujitsu

  4. Qual Communication

  5. ECI Telecom etc.

These companies not only cater the majority of the telecom equipment demands all over the world but are also increasing their market share every day.

The astounding array of technical advances is constantly reducing costs and expanding capabilities in telecommunications. This acts as one of the best attributes of the telecom industry; it's ever changing and evolving nature. It has now become evident that no business, whether big or small can survive without having a good telecommunication system. Especially in today's times when within a short span which can be as less as seconds an entire business can mark a history or set new targets.
